Climate Action

Climate change is a global issue that is affecting communities, lives, businesses and economies all over the world. SHCAN is working to support rural smallholder farmers to build resilience and adaptation to climate change.

Bamboo

Agroforestry is one of the many sustainable agriculture practices that can help farmers mitigate and adapt to the climate crisis.

We are working closely with rural farmers to plant bamboo and Grevillea robusta (commonly known as the silky oak or silver oak) trees around their land. This can be as landmarks, dedicated woodlots, or for ornamental purposes.

Coffee

We are actively supporting smallholder farmers—particularly women, to engage in sustainable coffee production as a pathway to both economic empowerment and environmental stewardship.

Beyond the income benefits, growing coffee using agroecological methods plays a vital role in mitigating climate change. Through our agroforestry approaches, where coffee is grown under the canopy of native or fruit trees. Farmers are therefore able to increase carbon sequestration, enhance soil health, and support biodiversity. Organic practices reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and restoring degraded land.

Cookstoves

In Uganda, over 90% of households rely on biomass fuels, primarily firewood, and use the traditional 3-stone stoves for cooking. This heavy dependence on traditional cooking methods contributes to deforestation, environmental degradation, and health issues due to indoor air pollution.

To address these challenges, SHCAN is supporting rural farming communities in Hoima District to transition from traditional open-fire cooking methods to cleaner, more efficient technologies. Through the Improved Lorena Cookstove Adoption in Hoima project, we have installed 11 stoves. There are also 12 gasifier cookstoves in use in the community  Through community sensitisation, practical demonstrations, and training workshops, we empower farmers, focusing on women, to adopt these improved cookstoves in their households.
